Bangkok Taxi Tips

Taxis are a great way to get around Bangkok.
They are very cheap and very air conditioned.

A few things to note:

When first arriving at the airport you will be charged extra to get a taxi from the arrivals area. A good idea is to go upstairs to the departures area and grab a taxi dropping someone else off to skip the charges.

Always get a taxi to turn on their meter. Drivers are required by law to turn their meters on but they often do not. If you're getting into a cab and the driver quotes you a price, you can either ask him politely to turn the meter on or just close the door and get another one (better idea). If you're leaving a touristy area or somewhere like a bus station and drivers are quoting you prices, it's advisable to walk past them to a main road and flag one down.

Have your destination written down in Thai, but don't rely on this. Addresses can sometimes mean nothing to the drivers. Try to find out recognizable landmarks that are close. Better yet is to have the phone # of your destination handy and get the driver to give them a call. Bangkok is huge and can be confusing at times (even for the drivers).

Taxis that are unoccupied have a red neon sign lit up on their dash.

Thais don't wave hello-style to stop them - they wave by flapping their hands up and down.

Most taxis don't have seat belts in the backseats, and sometimes when you do find belts they don't work. Ironically Bangkok is the one city where you wish there more working seat belts.

Bargirls (Hookers)

Prostitutes are not labelled the same in Thailand. They are commonly referred to as "bargirls" (BG) since most of them are employed in open-air "beer bars" all around the country. Most places that tourists visit you will find beer bars.

You can sit down at any bar as long as you order a drink. There will be no shortage of girls ready to serve you, light your cigarettes, play a game (Jackpot is a personal favorite), cool you down with a wet towel, massage your shoulders and of course, engage you in basic broken-English conversation. Most of the girls working in bars come from the poorer north-east of the country, but many come from all over to make relatively easy money to send back to the family. Most bargirls choose this life, as they can make in one night what the average local might make in a couple of weeks. The currency in Thailand is the baht.

So if you're at a bar and you find a girl that you fancy, you can take the girl out of the bar by paying what's called a "barfine". This usually costs around 500-600 baht (approx $16-20) and is paid directly to the bar. Before doing this, it is a wise idea to organize prices with the girl for what happens afterwards. Prices can vary here. The minimum that one will pay is Bt500 usually for a "short-time" (a few hours), or 1000 baht ($32) for a "long-time" (all night and the next morning). The prices depend on the girl, how attractive you are and how much she likes you. Some have limits and no matter how much they like you they will not go below a certain price. The most I've ever been quoted was 2000 baht, but I've heard of other stunners going for around 4-5000 (usually in Bangkok Go-Go bars that cater to Japanese clientele). Personally I've never paid more than 1500 (and this turned out to be a disappointment). 1000 baht for all-night is a fair price.

What I usually do is see if a girl will hook up with me for free. Sometimes they will if you're cool or you both click and she feels like taking the night off work. Still, even if a bargirl sleeps with me for free, I will pay her out of respect. This is their work and usually their main means of survival, and they greatly appreciate the understanding. Also it keeps things professional, the last thing you want is a bargirl to get the wrong idea and think that you're genuinely interested in a relationship (or maybe you do want this). As a wise man I once met said "I don't pay them for sex, I pay them to leave!"

Chilling with bargirls is great fun, but be warned (especially if you're not experienced with women). These girls can be extremely attractive, alluring, seductive and addictive. Many men have lost their minds, their fortunes and even their lives after getting involved with bargirls. Also every attractive bargirl (and many less attractive ones) will have at least one guy overseas (usually multiple) 'sponsoring' them by sending them money every month. Usually this is paid to them under the agreement that they stop working in their bar and remain faithful, but this is rarely the case. Or sometimes they will honor their promise and leave the bars, but still work as a freelancer in nightclubs. Wouldn't you? Their monthly salary is being paid automatically and they do nothing. Also many have their main Thai boyfriend that lurks in the shadow or picks her up after a hard day's work. I'm not quite sure how they get around the jealousy aspect, but I'm sure the constant flow of money eases their sorrows.

So there you go, a quick breakdown on the infamous bargirl. By all means, hang out with them, have fun and get laid (always use protection obviously). Just be careful, chances are the nice sweet one you meet is not different, and a relationship with one is doomed from the start. The number of heartbreaking stories far outweigh the successes (although many exist). Still, there are plenty of 'normal' Thai women out there that are of much higher quality if that is what one is after.

Let me just say, that before visiting Thailand I had never slept a hooker. Never felt the urge, never even considered it once. But upon arrival in Thailand one notices that it is very different to a Western country. Bargirls are famous for giving GFE (girlfriend effect). Even though you both know it's a business transaction and nothing will eventuate, they still sometimes make you feel like you're in a loving relationship. This is where a lot of guys get sucked in. As long as you appreciate the GFE for what it is (a nice temporary experience) then you'll be fine. Many men have failed to take heed, and many are no longer with us..

Koh Samui / Koh Phangan (Full Moon Party) / Koh Tao

Koh Samui is an island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, approximately halfway between Bangkok & Phuket. Samui has its own airport which is basically a big bungalow. An island similar to Phuket (touristy & expensive), I rarely holiday there but I've heard good reports from others (except the sexpats as Samui's bargirls are considered the ugliest and the most expensive in Thailand).

                                                           Lamai Beach, Koh Samui

Koh Phangan (pronounced closer to "parn-gun" NOT "pan-yang") is a smaller island off Samui and home to the FMP (Full Moon Party). Insane party, lots of fun. Glow-in-the-dark tattoos costing almost as much as real ones. Rows of booth beach vendors selling buckets along with straws, small bottles of spirits and then filled up with energy drinks. As lethal as they sound. Beachside stereo towers blasting House, Trance, Breaks and DnB all night. What was once upon a time considered a fun place to get high is now a very risky place to purchase illicit substances. Shakes are still sometimes sold containing "hetkeekwai" (เห็ดขี้ควาย) - Buffalo-Shit Mushrooms. I've also heard of "hetkeechang" (เห็ดขี้ช้าง) - Elephant Shit Mushrooms but cannot comment on their potency.

                                                          FMP, Haad Rin, Koh Phangan

As you can imagine the Full Moon Party can get pretty wild. There are always injuries, thefts and plain old silly drunken behaviour. I once saw a very inebriated young white male being taken behind a building by what looked like a hot Thai girl but on closer inspection turned out to be a ladyboy. I assume the guy was oblivious, and hopefully he was not robbed of his possessions along with some of his hetero status.

It's convenient to stay in Haad Rin, then you're only a small walk away from a hot shower and a nice bed (if you can't pick up here then there is something wrong). Rooms book out in advance so be prepared. You can get there by ferry from Samui (approx 200 baht + 1hr ride), or quicker via long-tail boat or speedboat. (anywhere from 600 -1000 baht and 15-30mins). If you take the quicker vehicles always make sure you have access to life jackets, especially at night. Don't ride in any boat that's been overloaded (unless you get a really good price).

If you're not in town during the FMP there's also Half-Moon Parties (along with other various lunar procession parties) so you're always guaranteed a good time. I've heard the rest of Koh Phangan is extremely beautiful and quiet. The diving around Samui and Phangan is also excellent but the serious diver should go further north to a smaller island called Koh Tao.

                                                      Whale shark, Koh Tao

Koh Tao (turtle island) is basically alcohol and dive shops. If you want to do a PADI dive course do it here. The diving is amazing and the dive shops love to undercut each other so you'll get a great deal. Koh Tao is renowned for sightings of the holy grail of diving, the Whale Shark. The largest fish in the ocean, these massive harmless creatures are amazing to interact with.

So there you have it. These 3 islands are close to each other and the perfect holiday can be had in this area. Just don't get super wasted alone, always be wary of safety precautions and you'll have a blast.

Phuket

Let's start with Phuket. It's one of the more popular locations that consistently draws tourists. Phuket is Thailand's largest island and is located in the south. It has its own international airport and ridiculously overpriced taxis will be waiting for you on arrival. The most popular area is Patong Beach and its main road, Bangla. Most people think of Phuket as Bangla but there are many other areas and beaches that are much nicer. Overall, Phuket is nice but overpriced compared with other areas.

Intro

Welcome to my Thailand Travel Tips!

Brought to you by a self-proclaimed Western expert on Thai women and Thai culture.
Firstly some common phrases and abbreviations:

LOS = Land of Smiles. Thailand is a smiley country! Everyone will smile at you. Girls, guys, cops, lawyers and babies included. So it's worth smiling back! I think this is one of the things that makes living in LOS so enjoyable. (Although it may not always be genuine), everyone is very nice and smiley.

BG = Bargirl. A girl who works in a bar. More specifically a girl who works for an open air "bar beer" (บาร์เบียร์) or as a dancer in a Go-Go. Some of these girls work as wait staff but almost all of them are sleeping with guys for money.

TG = Thai girl. Just a normal, typical, everyday Thai girl. Student, unemployed, corporate, whatever, just not a BG.

BKK = Bangkok, which interestingly is not called Bangkok in Thai (it's the old name). Thais call the city 'Kroong-thep' (กรุงเทพ)

P4P = Pay for Play. Sex for money. Thailand is popular with sex tourists (someone who travels overseas for the explicit reason of sleeping with the locals) and sexpats (someone who loves the local women so much that they pack up and move there).

T-I-T - "This is Thailand". A phrase uttered by countless tourists and expats upon witnessing one of the many inconceivable and ridiculously improbable daily occurrences in LOS. Honestly, you just have to shake your head and say "T-I-T".
